UTMIS Autumn Course 2026 at KTH, Stockholm, 21-22 October

Welcome to UTMIS Autumn Course at KTH in Stockholm! The theme of the course is “Fatigue of Materials”. Lecturer is Professor Subra Suresh, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA.

Course Description
This course will provide an overview and some in-depth discussion on a wide variety of topics in the broad area of fatigue of materials.

Sessions will include descriptions of fatigue crack initiation and propagation, methods of characterization of the onset and progression of fatigue cracks in structural components, complex loading modes, thermomechanical and environmental factors, mechanics of fracture, and the micro-mechanisms of damage and failure in crystalline and amorphous as well as in natural and synthetic materials.

An attempt will be made to connect multiple length scales covering the nanoscopic to the macroscopic dimensions of structural details.  Concepts on fatigue of materials will be illustrated with real-life examples of issues related to fatigue in engineering, covering aerospace, automotive, microelectronics, biomechanics, civil engineering, and energy industries.

Limitations of various approaches will also be highlighted, wherever appropriate. Classical teaching methods for this course will also be supplemented with the latest tools involving AI-based approaches and large language models for demonstration of concepts, learning modes, design assistance, structural optimization and material characterization.
